John always felt like the odd one out. He was born deaf, found he was gay in high school, and then soon after had his body begin developing out of control. High school was a mess when everyone treated you differently- most of the guys bullied him for being gay and deaf, and the girls avoided him for being a hyper. Sure, sometimes the reasons changed, but John learned quickly that few people, if any, really wanted to be with him.

He carried that mentality into college and through his first year there, but during his second year, he saw a freshman being bullied- a fellow hyper. Letting his façade down this once, he stepped in and helped the poor guy, pulling him away from danger. The stranger thanked him, then surprised John by switching to ASL when he tried to pull out his notepad to communicate. The freshman introduced himself as Aaron, and the two quickly found common ground between themselves. Before long, the two had formed a close friendship, John acting as Aaron’s guide on campus and helping him when his hyper attributes got too much in the way.

His confidence grew as the years passed and when he graduated and found a stable job with a company that primarily tested products for hyper women, he put himself out on the dating market and finally found a boyfriend that liked him for being him.

A year or so later, John was surprised to see Aaron introducing him to someone he met: another hyper named Nathan. He was looking to make a support group between hypers and managed to talk Aaron into the idea. John was cautious at first, but what was the harm in getting help from another hyper? He accepted, and the three of them started the group, meeting up semi-frequently to… hang out, mostly. Just be around company that didn’t see themselves as strange.

From then on, John had let the group become a part of his life, welcoming the two new later recruits, Devon and Gabriel, with open arms.
