Nathan grew up in a small town, where social circles were small and friend groups smaller still. The situation didn’t bother him much; as introverted as he was, he was more than happy to keep his few close friends and bury his head in his books.

Being one of the youngest in his class, puberty came for him last. He heard plenty of stories from his classmates about the changes that would befall him, both good and ill. And when he finally found the changes happening to him, he was excited at first. When he blew past most of the other students’ sizes, he was estatic. But when he shot past subhyper sizes with no signs of slowing down, he really began to worry.

Most of his friends stopped talking to him, seeing him as a freak of nature. He still hung on to a few of his friends, including the two subhyper girls, but never really got anywhere with the only subhyper guy in school. At this stage in his life, the librarian, a hyper woman, was one of the few friends he still had.

Things improved marginally during college, and he did find a few friends, but none of them got that close to him. When he graduated and moved to Santa Maria, he specifically sought out other hyper men to meet with and form friendships. Within a week, he found Aaron, a clerk at a hobby store, and saved him from an embarassing situation. After getting to know him, Aaron introduced him to John, an old friend of his.

The three of them began meeting regularly, finding respite from all the people who treated them with suspicion and kept them at a distance, or those who were a little too interested in them and chased them down. Fairly quickly, they found strong friendships with each other. A few months later, Nathan would meet and then introduce the group to Devon and Gabriel in short order. Since then, the group of five has stayed in close contact, meeting every so often to help each other and live ’normally’ without having to worry about other people acting weird around them.

A few months after arriving in Santa Maria, while getting milk from an organization of hyper women, Nathan met with Aria, a hyper woman who lived at that location. The pump there broke down while he was being served, so Aria decided to step in and help fill his order. He cooked something for her as thanks, then helped her with a few tech problems she was having. They talked and got to know each other better… and before they knew it, they were dating.
